Protecting the Works
The artistic treasures housed in the Art Stations require and attentive care as a result of the particular underground microclimate in which they are located, as well as specialized maintenance depending on the materials used in the execution of each work.  There are numerous types of installations in the stations: from oil and acrylic paintings on canvas to mosaics, from bronze or steel sculptures to neon tubes, from majolicas to light boxes, from polycarbonates to photographs.
In order to protect such public heritage and see to the monitoring of the state of conservation, maintenance, and restoration of the works, Metronapoli has entered into an agreement with The Naples Academy of Fine Arts and Metropolitana di Napoli, the agency which oversees the planning and construction of Line 1 and follows the progression and execution of the works of art from the first sketch to the final installation.
In the context of this project, the Academy is cataloguing every work, both from the art history and preservation point of view, leading the upkeep and restoration operations with its involvement in the “worksite-schools”, manned by students enrolled in the preservation and restoration of contemporary art course. A detailed photo diary documents the state of the works, the problems associated with preservation, and the various stages of restoration.
