Line 1

Line 1 of the metro is the keystone of the Naples public transport system, serving the Naples metropolitan system thanks to numerous transfers to the railroad systems and ample parking facilities to the north of the city which permit users to leave behind their cars in favour of public means of transport.

Line 1, currently in use, connects Piscinola with the centrally located Piazza Dante by way of Vomero.  It services 14 stations over a distance of 13.5 Km of the network, in some places reaching an incline of 5.5%.  For internal movement, the line is equipped with 76 escalators and mobile walkways, and 47 lifts.  Nearly the entire line is located underground, with the exception of the section between Colli Aminei/Piscinola, which uses a viaduct.  The stations serviced are: Dante, Museo, Materdei, Salvator Rosa, Quattro Giornate; Vanvitelli, Medaglie d’Oro, Monte donzelli, Rione Alto, Policlinico, Colli Aminei, Frullone, Chiaiano- Marianella, Piscinola.

On workdays there are approximately 220 trains a day from 6:00 to 23:00, which during rush hours pass on average every 7 minutes and travel at a speed of 32 Km/hour.

On average, the line is used by 110 thousand travellers a day during workdays, and 40 thousand a day during holidays and weekends.
The planning and realisation of Line 1 are managed by Metropolitana S.p.A, licensed by the Commune of Naples for the execution of public works.

At the completion of the line in 2011, there will be rail ring arriving at Piscinola by way of Piazza Garibaldi, the Centro Direzionale, and Capodichino Airport.
